Anxious, hopeful or both? A new installation wants to know.

In A Monument for the Anxious and Hopeful, creative person Candy Chang puts our modern psyche on full display.

Are you lot more anxious or hopeful almost your hereafter? It probably depends on the day. A new interactive installation aims to collect and catalogue these emotions to capture a snapshot of the prevailing mood today in 2018.

In A Monument for the Anxious and Hopeful, artists Processed Chang and James Reeves invite participants to record their wishes and worries and share them publicly on a monolithic 31-by-fifteen-foot wall in the lobby of New York City's Rubin Museum of Fine art, a museum exploring the arts and ideas of the Himalayan region.

The monument, which will be on brandish for the elapsing for 2018, has already received more than than 20,000 responses and Chang hopes that one day, this living catalogue might be used by psychologists and sociologists to assess how we grapple with the doubtfulness of the future.

Here, Chang, a TED Young man, tells united states virtually the new installation and why sharing our anxieties and hopes with each other could actually assist usa better understand our feelings besides.

What inspired A Monument for the Anxious and Hopeful?

Nosotros're living through a very unsettled moment of uncertainty, isolation, and tribalism. That'south a delightful recipe for anxiety, which many studies say is on the rise.

James and I are interested in rituals for emotional health, and we wanted to create a communal space to address our uneasiness, reconnect with our core values, and contemplate the prevailing mood of 2018. This participatory installation is virtually our emotional relationship with the future, equally well as our relationship with i another. Seeing some private corner of your psyche reflected in somebody else'south handwriting on a wall tin can exist incredibly reassuring on an private level. Information technology'south besides a reminder of the humanity in the faces around u.s. — something which our polarized and atomized society makes it easy to forget.

A Monument for the Anxious and Hopeful asks visitors to share their deepest desires and worries publicly.

How did you lot zero in on anxiety and promise as prevailing moods?

By definition, feet and hope are both determined by a moment that has yet to make it. I'thousand a walking cabinet of dread and desire, and when I ignore these feelings they usually come out sideways and manifest in negative ways like resentment, defensiveness, procrastination, or project onto others. Pinning down our hopes and uncertainties in ink tin remind u.s. of gratitude and purpose, and giving our anxieties some definition can help us face them.

It'due south a fitting exercise to do in the Rubin Museum because it adopts Buddhist practices along with psychological techniques. A helpful first pace in dealing with our anxieties is to greet them and give them a proper name. Then nosotros can examine them more objectively and pause them down further. Psychologists have shown how productive this tin can be. It may not brand us less agape, just it can make us braver.

A Monument for the Anxious and Hopeful has collected more than than 20,000 responses in the last four months.

Every bit an artist, you're a monument builder. What does information technology mean to build a monument?

You can tell a lot about a society past its public fine art. For thousands of years, our monuments were by and large humongous statues of powerful leaders. Today the possibilities for public art have expanded as our values evolve and we champion things similar republic, community, and inclusiveness. Our environment can split up us or it can connect us. It can minimize u.s.a. or it can ennoble united states of america. As nosotros become increasingly stressed, polarized, and socially isolated, I believe local infrastructure for the soul is more important than ever. This public invitation to share our inner lives without fearfulness of judgment can assistance us shed our façades, restore perspective, reduce stigma around discussing our emotional health, and cultivate understanding of one another.

Have visitors had more than to be hopeful for, or broken-hearted most?

We've received over 20,000 responses in the beginning four months and, although information technology's a close competition, promise is currently in the lead. I'g kind of surprised, but this might have something to practice with people's behavior in the museum as they're sharing alongside friends or family. Or perchance I'm just darker than the boilerplate bear.

Many of these hopes are around love, organized religion, community, and activism, and they remind me to exist grateful for my relationships and for moments of beauty and possibility, big and small-scale. Information technology'south likewise interesting to come across where our hopes and anxieties overlap. The amount of pick in our lives today — of career paths, beloved partners, toothpaste — makes some people excited and many others restless. Many people feel despair about our political climate, while others say they are energized because citizens seem more than engaged than before.

What are some of your favorite entries?

I'chiliad anxious considering… I feel so much responsibleness in my own potential, of too many cyberspace tabs open, I care also much about what people think of me, our politics take lost all integrity, people are more open up to expressing their hatred, my dad died and I'grand afraid I'll exist deplorable forever, so much of our behavior is self-mutilating, of the incessant sound of machines.

I'yard hopeful because… I'm gear up to autumn in love again, young people are marching, my mother is condign more than accepting of others, what I focus on always grows, we are learning that success should exist measured by love and not by our income, I'm working on my mind, there is notwithstanding so much music left to detect, the earth is total of good people — they just don't make the news.

What are some of the trends you've noticed in terms of what people are hopeful or anxious for?

There are many anxieties around gun command, women's rights, and student debt. Ane of the most mutual concerns is about applied science:

I'grand broken-hearted because… people are addicted to cell phones, of constant overstimulation, I can't concentrate anymore, we're losing our privacy, I don't know how to be solitary, of toxic anger, beingness misunderstood is scary, we're building things we don't understand.

Our screens have reshaped the way we communicate and then completely that, as James and I have discussed, sometimes it seems as if there are very few places to express ourselves in public without feeling every bit if we're performing for some berserk scoreboard of hearts, stars, and thumbs-up icons. From today's vantage point, the early visions of the internet equally an open, polyglot identify for 18-carat expression seems almost heartbreakingly optimistic, but I call back nosotros're beginning to witness a much-needed reckoning with the psychic toll of social media and behavioral manipulation. A physical space for anonymously sharing our uncertainties can be an antidote to the manufactured outrage, curated personas, and clickbait of digital life.

The project is upwardly for one full year. How exercise yous come across this monument growing and changing in its meaning over the course of its life?

It will change depending on how we alter, and I hope some people volition consider it a regular practise for emotional health. James and I are very interested in the role of ritual in these days of distraction. We both grew upwards without religion or spirituality, and this made us feel unmoored and unequipped to deal with some of the tragedies of life. I remember feeling jealous of religious rituals when I felt like I was releasing my grief like a splatter painting. There is a lot of opportunity to expand what secular spirituality might look like and how communities can meliorate serve the psychological health of its citizens. Our public spaces can play a profound part in our well-existence and kinship if we give them the attention they deserve.

What happens to the projection (and the entries) next year?

We're having conversations with psychologists and researchers about means they tin can analyze the responses to further our understanding and resources for mental health. Nosotros're also thinking of making a book that athenaeum and expands upon the major themes that are emerging. In the meantime, we've created a project page where you can sort through a growing selection of responses across different themes. Nosotros're also creating short videos to put responses in conversation with one another.

It has been an enlightening experience to look under the hood and see that we're all walking wounded, nursing many of the same anxieties and desires. Information technology's too an intimate glimpse into the struggles of our neighbors, and a reminder that we play a office in this, too. As someone wrote, "I'grand hopeful because it really is upwards to me what happens next."
